Latest one targets Senate Republicans
Showing no signs of letting up in its campaign alleging that the nation has been “betrayed†by those who support President Bush’s policies in Iraq, MoveOn.org Political Action today takes aim at Senate Republicans.
A new “Betrayal of Trust†TV ad targets Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other Republican senators for voting “against a plan that would give our soldiers reasonable time to spend with their families before having to return to war.â€
MoveOn says it will spend $100,000 to broadcast the ad in Kentucky and nationally on CNN. The liberal group hasn’t yet put the ad on YouTube. We’re planning to post it here once they do.
MoveOn’s original ad in this series — a New York Times full-pager wondering whether Gen. David Petraeus should be called “General Betray Us†— set off a controversy that continues to rage and has spurred Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani’s campaign to run an ad in response.
Update at 11:25 a.m. ET. Bush condemns’ MoveOn’s ad and Democrats’ reactions:
Asked at a press conference this morning about the “General Betray Us†and, President Bush was harsh about both MoveOn and Democratic leaders.
The ad, he said, “was disgusting. It was an attack not only on Gen. Petraeus but on the U.S. military. … I was disappointed that not more leaders in the Democratic Party spoke out more strongly against that kind of ad.†The president’s conclusion: “Most Democrats are afraid of irritating a left-wing group — or are more afraid of irritating them — then they are of irritating the U.S. military. That was a sorry deal. … It’s one thing to attack me, but another to attack somebody like Gen. Petraeus.â€
